Gordon Duncan is regarded as one of the most talented and innovative pipers in Scotland (and beyond) - some even say he is a genius (and I have no argument with that!). In addition to his solo playing and long association with the Grade 1 MacNaughton's Vale of Atholl Pipe Band. Gordon has worked with various Scottish folk bands, including Tannahill Weavers, Wolfstone, The Dougie MacLean Band and Ceolbeg. He is also a fine composer and many of his tunes have already passed into the repertoire of pipe bands, folk groups and Scottish dance bands. Gordon's composition "Andy Renwick's Ferret" has been recorded so often it must now be a contender for the Guinness Book of Records!
Gordon's first solo album - "Just For Seumas") -received rave reviews worldwide and has become a Greentrax 'best seller". Here is what some of the critics said of that album:-
"The most accessible bagpipe album I've heard in a long time" - Dirty Linen, U.S.A.;
"This is a beautifully recorded album" - Centrastus Magazine;
"A feast for pipe fans & Scots folk aficionados in general" - John O'Regan, Ireland;
"One of the most eagerly awaited albums of the year" - Living Tradition;
"The playing throughout is exceptional" - Shire Folk; "Playing with a crispness and lightness that few others achieve" - Folk Roots.
On "The Circular Breath" Gordon is joined by tenor banjo wizard Gerry O'Connor on several tracks; plus lan Carr (guitar); Andy Cook (Ugandan harp); Ranald MacArthur (bass guitar); Donald Hay (drums) and Jim Sutherland (congas, djembe and clay pot), who also produced. All these musicians had a ball working on the album and Gerry O'Connor was so taken with the partnership he immediately invited Gordon to guest on Gerry's forthcoming second solo album. The album was recorded at Castle Cava and Pier House Studios and the sleeve design, from an idea by Mary Duncan, is by John Haxby.
Gordon plays a selection of traditional tunes, several of his own compositions and the work of other composers, including two from the talented pen of Roddy MacDonald who was also responsible for the wonderfully titled "Last Tango in Harris" on "Just For Seumas". Gordon plays the Highland pipes, practice chanter and Overton whistle.
